Natcore chooses Rochester, New York for PV research center

On April 21st, 2011, Natcore Technology Inc. (Red Bank, New Jersey, U.S.) announced that it will establish a research center at Eastman Business Park in Rochester, New York, United States.

The focus of the Natcore Research and Development Center will be the development of thin-film solar photovoltaic (PV) cells and tandem solar cells, using the company's liquid phase deposition (LPD) technology.

"We chose Rochester for several reasons," said Natcore President and CEO Chuck Provini. "It will give us access to Kodak's considerable prowess in thin-film technology and much of the infrastructure we will require.”

"In addition, we can tap expertise at Rochester's distinguished universities."

Natcore also recognized the role of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-New York) in attracting the research facility to Rochester.

Natcore to consolidate research activities at Rochester.

The company states that research currently conducted at Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio, U.S.), Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.) and a joint venture in China will be consolidated in Rochester. Natcore notes that it will continue its joint research program with the Barron Group at Rice University.

Natcore has signed a lease for two equipped labs, a clean room and administrative offices. The facility will also house the first production model of Natcore's intelligent LPD processing station for growing anti-reflective coatings on silicon wafers.

The center will be funded with the proceeds of a December 2010 private placement. Natcore states that it will soon begin interviewing engineers, scientists and technicians to fill eight positions at the new facility.

Natcore still searching for manufacturing location.

Natcore notes that it is still searching for a site and partners to research, develop and manufacture thin-film PV cells using its proprietary processes. The company is looking at a number of facilities that have were previously dedicated to the manufacture of roll-to-roll film, including Eastman Business Park and potential facilities in China and other nations.
